SIX DEGREES OF FREEDOM

(source : www.popularmechanics.com)

Here, I would like to share some information about ship movement. How the ship’s looks like when fighting with heavy weather? Do not worry because the structure of the vessel was constructed strongly to face the heavy weather. When the vessel was maneouvering in heavy weather, the ship movement will develop into six degrees motion that called 6 degrees of freedom . They are:

          1)      Surging –

Movement forward as the bow of a ship rises and dips hen it encountered waves which are strong enough to life it. The ship surge up the side of a wave, often shipping water as it passes through the rest then dips down the other side of the wave.

          2)      Swaying-

The swing of a mast or bow of the ship from side to side as the vessel progresses in a
       heavy sea.

          3)      Yawing-

Where the bow of a ship’s may falls away or sways erratically from side to side as the
vessel moves through the water. This may be caused by lack of steerage control.

          4)      Pitching-

The motion of the ship in rising the crest of a wave then descending into the following trough.

          5)      Rolling-

The motion of a ship from side to side as she moves through the water.

          6)      Heaving-

The motion of the ship when the ship have being up by a wave or sea.
